The easiest way to get around in the Dominican Republic is to hire a car from the airport. Driving for the first time over here does take some courage, and the locals tend to drive rather eratically. They aren't however agressive, and despite the constant horn blowing, you will see lots of friendly waving and smiling. Many drivers also take their time, so it pays to relax and take it easy. As always, it makes sense to take out Collision Damage Waiver insurance and hire a car from a firm you can trust, so if the worst happens, you'll only be liable for the excess.
Advantage, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, Payless and Thrifty are all represented in the Dominican Republic, and in most cases you can prebook the car online for collection from the airport.
